DF/IR is not dying. It’s just harder than ever.
The cybersecurity competence bar’s dropped so low it’s in the basement. Companies don’t want experts; they want button-pushers who’ll work cheap. DF/IR’s soul, placing the suspect behind the keyboard, is getting lost in the automation and artificial intelligence haze, when it should be cut away from the cybersecurity umbrella to live on its own.
Hacks4Pancakes Nails It: The Market’s a Dumpster Fire
I stumbled on a Reddit post by Hacks4Pancakes. She’s been running clinics and mentorships for over a decade, and her take on the entry-level cybersecurity market is brutal: “It’s about the worst I’ve seen since 2008.” Check it out here. Scroll the comments, over a hundred of them, and you’ll feel the desperation. Kids with degrees, certs, CTF badges, etc. One line from her thread hit hard: “Our last tier 2 roles had over 170 applicants.”
That’s not a job market; that’s a meat grinder. And DF/IR? It’s not even on the radar for most of these newbies; it’s too far up the greased rungs of the ladder.
SOC/NOC: The Low-Pay Hellhole
Let’s talk the entry ramp: SOC and NOC. They’re where the industry shoves you to “pay your dues.” Monitor alerts, reset passwords, yawn through night shifts for $70,000-$90,000. It’s a soul-crushing slog, low to decent pay, high turnover, and zero respect. You’re not investigating; you’re a glorified janitor sweeping up digital crumbs. SOC/NOC is not a DF/IR pipeline. Once in, you spend years trying to get out.
AI: Artificial Intrusion
I am not a fan of Artificial Intelligence doing the work of DF/IR, but I am a realist. AI is here. AI is faster and better than 90% of us. AI will make mistakes, but humans do, too. I don’t know which makes the most mistakes, but the point is that nothing is mistake-free. I would trust a human more than AI, but I’m not a corporation that is trying to save money by not hiring humans when I can buy AI.
Give me a terabyte of data to analyze, and I’ll get back to you in a week. Give it to AI, and you won’t have time to refill your coffee before getting results. That’s tough competition.
One thing on AI: AI will not eliminate expert analysis or be a replacement for the need of a human to stand by their findings. If you want career security, be the DF/IR professional who might use AI, not be the button pusher that AI uses.
Colleges: Peddling Cyber Trash
Colleges are a big part of this mess. They’ve flooded the market with “cybersecurity” grads—$50,000 in debt for a degree that’s worth less than the paper it’s printed on. Schools sold a hyped-up BS in Cybersecurity as a golden ticket. In my opinion, the only thing that a degree holds in this field is checking the box of having any degree, from any school. An exception would be Computer Science degrees. Maybe it is just me, but you can quickly learn “cybersecurity” without college, so maybe get a useful degree.
Clearances: The Elitist Gate
Then there’s the security clearance game. Top Secret, Secret. If you can get one, the DF/IR doors crack open. Fed contractors drool over TS/SCI folks, paying $100,000-$120,000 to start. But if you’re not ex-military or hooked into the alphabet soup (FBI, DHS, NSA), you’re screwed. The process takes 6-18 months, and no employer sponsors a newbie for that. It’s a golden key if you’ve got it, but a locked gate if you don’t. Most grads? They’re on the outside, clearance-less, staring at a wall they can’t climb.
But that’s only for the jobs that require clearances. If you don’t want to for any of them, no problem. If you do, well, that’s a problem.
The “Job Shortage” Hype: Pure Fiction?

The shortage is a myth for juniors; it’s a glut of overeducated, under-experienced grads fighting for scraps. From hundreds of thousands to millions of unfilled positions, you’d think there’d be no openings with all the graduate students. So what is it? Do we have millions of unfilled spots and millions of unemployed cyber applicants?
DF/IR’s Last Stand
Forensic experts are dwindling because of the pure craft’s fading. Tools do the work, SOC/NOC grinds you down and traps you in that role, colleges churn out useless skills, clearances gatekeep, and the “shortage” is a lie. I broke in with no degree, by risking to work cases of stacked drives on real cases when no one else would. Now? You’re clawing through a rigged mess.
So, yes, I agree that traditional digital forensics practitioners are a dying breed because they really aren’t needed for 95% of casework when a computer program can do most of the work. But for the 5% of cases, that is the top tier of billing rates for cases that hinge on interpreting a handful of forensic artifacts to determine the outcome of a case.
If you really want to be DF/IR…
I look at DF/IR, the pure traditional roles, as Tier 1 of the cybersecurity field, the Delta Force of Cyber. They live in hex and can put together cases as if they were there watching the actors when the act happened. They are comfortable in the most complex cases, can testify with confidence, and test everything. These are the exceptional professionals who get the cool cases. They investigate using whatever DF/IR tools they have at hand.
But just like Delta Force requires an inhuman sacrifice to get there, DF/IR is no different. DF/IR is not a dying breed. It is just one where the DF/IR pro knows what they are doing, and if they don’t, they can figure it out as if they knew how to do it all along.
Some tips to get there, and I’m still working my way through these every day!
- Build your investigative portfolio now and share your work.
- If you must start in SOC/NOC, have your exit plan ready (do the following..).
- Target DF/IR adjacent roles (ediscovery, insurance investigations, litigation support, etc…).
- Build a DF/IR home lab and analyze data (there are terabytes of data publicly available).
- A CS degree > Cybersecurity degree
- Focus on skills, not certs or degrees UNLESS the job you want requires it.
- Master the fundamentals. This is a key difference between the DF/IR expert and everyone else.
- Learn to code, at least a little.
- Learn where AI fails and excel in that area.
- Get certs and training that matters.
- If I were to interview you, I’d give you a USB with some data and ask you to build a case on it. Critical thinking skills, investigative mindset, figuring it out.
DF/IR is the last investigative field of cybersecurity.
