Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside many talented individuals in the DFIR communities in both the public and private sectors. Our field is ever-evolving, with new tools and technologies emerging at a rapid pace. Yet, despite these advancements, I’ve noticed a recurring gap—a missing piece in the skillset of many professionals. That missing piece is the DFIR Investigative Mindset.

Understanding the technical aspects is crucial, but without the ability to think critically and approach problems like an investigator, we risk missing the bigger picture. It’s like having all the pieces of a puzzle but not knowing how they fit together.

A technician knows how to operate tools and devices effectively, much like someone who can fix a car by following a manual. An investigator, on the other hand, pieces together clues to solve a mystery, understanding not just the “how” but the “why” behind events when there is no manual.

Without an investigative mindset, we may miss critical connections, overlook subtle indicators, and ultimately fail to solve the cases we’re entrusted with. We can’t do the best job that can be done without this skill.
